ON the last of five nationwide visits that took it through key cities in the country, the Coca-Cola HALika! Caravan successfully raised
P115,407 during its culminating charity workout in Manila last month for the benefit of the Smart Future Foundation.
From August to December of last year, HALika! was able to raise P700,000 worth of donations to charities and touched the lives of thousands of people nationwide in the areas of La Union, Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Manila.
Some 800 participants attended the event, which was held at the Rajah Sulayman Park, Manila. Participants sweated it out for a good cause, burning a total of 115,407 calories. For every calorie lost, one peso was donated to the Smart Future Foundation, a non-profit organization offering scholarships, financial assistance and feeding programs to less fortunate children and their families in Paco, Manila. The group also provides educational training for the visually impaired.
Friends Trisha and Diane expressed their enjoyment for having joined the event. "It was great because HALika! was able to help people get active. We also learned that we need to be properly hydrated for our bodies to function properly and to be healthy."
They added, "What Coca-Cola did was admirable because aside from helping improve people’s health, they were also able to help out a foundation."
Last year marked the biggest HALika! campaign which brought the message of healthy and active living to Filipinos.
HALika! is grounded on three key values of balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and proper hydration.
Balanced nutrition means eating a wide variety of foods in moderation to make sure that your body gets everything it needs to stay healthy and active.
Regular physical activity means doing any activity that can get your body moving, sweating and burning calories for at least an hour to an hour and a half every day.
Proper hydration means consuming not 8 but 11-16 cups of total fluids depending on age, weight, gender, the weather and level of physical activity. Fluids mean that water is not the only source of hydration, all beverages hydrate like juices, teas and soft drinks as well as foods which contain water like fruits, vegetables, soups and stews.
A fun family fair also took place alongside the charity workouts, wherein participants enjoyed various games; the Fitness Fun Wall, Ring-Around-the-Drink and Food Pyramid Puzzle, wherein they learned more about healthy and active living and won instant prizes.
The fun and practical HALika! workouts are based on everyday activities such as household chores, walking to and from work and even dancing. These workouts help improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health.
