FOR Cruise 2010 Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini proposes new basics as the foundation for a modern wardrobe. The collection is rooted in the chic simplicity of a summer retreat, yet is elevated above the ordinary with its striking detail and exquisite fabrications.
A strong scuba influence weaves through the collection and gives it its unique flavour. Fabrics have been compressed and possess a weightier, more compact hand. White mesh, featherweight silks, draw strings and thick wet-suit zippers add a sporty component.
The scuba theme has brought structure to the silhouettes which are newly sculpted and trace the lines of the body. The little black dress has been reinvented in a new body-conscious way. Waists are nipped with tech stretch buckled belts, while short skirts are slightly puffed and emphasize the leg. An elongated line is emphasized with second-skin stretch pants, lean blazers and seersucker short-shorts.
Newly invented basics like a sharp GG mackintosh, a washed calfskin trench, the highwaisted slim trouser, or a fitted strapless dress are items to keep in your wardrobe forever.
The clean lines of this collection are set off by the crispness of bright white and bleached grey, and touches of cobalt. Pattern, when it appears, is striking and original like the new Palladio print or the bright blue and white mosaic embroideries which look like shards of broken glass.
Leather has been transformed into a technical fabric using specialized washings and finishings. A leather anorak has been pierced with tiny holes and embossed with a subtle GG pattern. A close-fitting white leather jacket has been stiffened and given a pock-marked surfacing, while another has been crafted from woven strips of black, white, blue and yellow leather.
Shoes are sky high and punctuate the elongated silhouette. A black leather platform sandal has cage-like straps and a thick vertical zip closure. Peep toe platforms feature wood wedges with illusionistic cut-outs. Both the pump and shoe bootie version come in clay and white leather, python or in a sporty white mesh.
Handbags are supersized with new bamboo detailing and exotic skins. The New Jackie makes an unexpected appearance in mustard crocodile.
