Betting on polls? Don’t, warns Comelec

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) yesterday advised the public not to place bets on the result of the May elections.

Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said the Omnibus Election Code states that "any person who bets or wagers upon the outcome of the election" is considered as committing an election offense.

Violators face imprisonment of one to six years without probation as well as the removal of right to vote and/or be voted to public office.

Sarmiento said the money or thing of value put up as a bet or wager shall be forfeited to the government.

But he said the just like other election offenses, the Comelec will act only if there is a complaint.
