Amit off to fast start in WPA 9-Ball Open

RUBILEN Amit flashed her deadly form yesterday and scored an easy 7-1 win over Maureen Seto of Canada in the first round of the 2010 Amway WPA Womens World 9-Ball Open at the Core Pacific Living Mall Hotel in Taipei, Taiwan.

Amit, named one of the co-winners of the Philippine Sportswriters Associations Athletes of the Year award, will next face Kynthios Orfanidis of the Netherlands. Orfanidis is coming off a 4-7 defeat to Yuan Chun- Lin of Chinese-Taipei.

Amit will also face Chun-Lin and PC Lin of the host country and Karen Korr of Great Britain in their Group E stage match.

The competitors in the tournament offering a total prize of $20,000 have been divided into eight groups with six players in each group. The top three in each group will advance into the knockout stage, still race-to-7 matches.

The semifinals will be race-to-9 matches while the final match will be race-to-11 affair.

In other matches, You Ram Cha of Korea beat Veronique Menard of Canada 7-4; Xiao Fang Fu of China beat Lyndall Huley of Australia 7-2; Line Kjorsvik of Norway defeated Jullie Kelly 7-4; Vivian Villareal of the United States crushed Carlynn Sanchez of Venezuela 7-1; Hui Shan- Lai of Chinese-Taipei blasted countryman J W Hyun 7-0; Chihiro Kahawara of Japan upset Kelly Fisher of the US 7-6; and Yun Mi Lin of Chinese-Taipei bested Tamara Rademakers of the Netherlands 7-1.
