UPLB inks reso to promote
agroforestry vs climate change

UP Los Baños delegates to the recently-concluded 4th National Agroforestry Congress sponsored by the Philippine Agroforestry Education and Research Network (PAFERN) signed a resolution to promote agroforestry as a strategy for climate change adaptation and to work towards institutionalizing agroforestry as a development strategy in the Philippines.

The resolution, signed by 152 delegates, noted that the agriculture sector, particularly the farming communities, is most vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change.

It recognized that agroforestry increases food production, income, fuelwood supply; and improves habitats, soil fertility and water supply, and the supply of fodder for fish and livestock.

The resolution also highlighted the fact that the diverse components of agroforestry provide multiple harvests at different times of the year, thereby ensuring income and reducing the risk of crop loss.

Agroforestry can thus help improve the lives of the farmers, help reduce poverty, and maintain ecological stability.

Signatories included representatives of local government units; research institutions and state colleges and universities; national government agencies, particularly the Departments of Agriculture and Environment and Natural Resources; non-government organizations; people’s organizations and farmers who participate in various agroforestry development endeavors; the PAFERN/UPLB Institute of Agroforestry, and core organizations in agroforestry and promotion in the Philippines.

UPLB is the pioneer and premier agroforestry school in the Philippines.
