NEW batch of young Filipino artists was honored recently during the 42nd Shell National Students Art Competition (NSAC) awards night held at the ground floor gallery of the Ayala Museum.

In the digital fine arts category, Andrei A. Venal of Philippine Women’s University won first prize for his work, "Minus" which was his own interpretation of the agony of heartbreak, change, and absence. Aside from the winner’s gold medal, he also won a plaque plus P50,000 cash.

Raphael Daniel O. David of UP Diliman, won first prize in the sculpture category for his work "Alagad ng Baboy." His sculpture was made with urethane paint on marine epoxy, and exposed the abuse of power of the supposed protectors of the state. He took home a gold medal, a plaque and P50,000 cash from Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC).

In the watercolor category, Jose Ma. P. Tanierla of UP Diliman won first prize for "Tatang Live." His work showed a guitarist’s body becoming deformed and aged, but not his music. He took home a gold medal and a plaque, P50,000 prize money from PSPC as well as products worth P5,000 from Star Paper.

Finally, in the oil/acrylic category, Emil Jay B. Guiang of Technological University of the Philippines took top honors with his work "Listen To Your Heart Desire." Guiang combined religious and pop culture symbols in his artwork to urge students to heed their authentic voice and pursue their passion. He took home a gold medal, plaque and P50,000 cash from PSPC as well as products worth P5,000 from Star Paper.

For this year’s student art competition, Shell went back to its roots through the calendar category. The theme for this year’s calendar art competition is "Nostalgia Islas Filipinas," which looked at entries depicting sceneries, landmarks, everyday life or historical events in the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao regions from 1880 to 1930.

In the calendar category, the winners were Bernie Jay M. Antiquando, "Execution of Jose Rizal" of E.A.R.I.S.T; Benedict V. Arquero, "Batang Tang Ti Kampana Dyay Bantay" of University of Northern Philippines; Miguel Angelo D. Lopez, "Old Binondo Church" of University of Santo Tomas; Lexter B. Longalong, "Busy Street of the Past" of Philippine Women’s University; Daryll H. Tudela, "The Filipina Fashion of 1880 to the Decade of 1930" of University of Rizal System Angono Campus; and Lance Kirby T. Yaneza, "Independencia" of FEATI University.

Each winner received a plaque and P40,000 worth of cash prizes from PSPC.

Organizers of the competition say it is Shell’s way of remembering the first time that the Shell National Students Art Competition became an avenue for finding the most suitable subject for its calendar.

Many winners who were once promising talents have gone on to be hailed as towering figures in their field, including National Artists Joya, Ang Kiukok and Bencab, as well as revered masters like Sanso and other leading contemporary artists.
