Mayol finally captures world crown

MEXICO. – Rodel Mayol of the Philippines finally succeeded in his title conquest on Sunday when he stopped Edgar Sosa of Mexico in the second round to capture the World Boxing Council light flyweight crown at the Palengue de la Feria in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, here.

Soso, the long-time world champion making his 11th title defense, was dropped in the second round by a Mayol combination. Moments later, the referee stopped the contest, declaring Sosa unfit to continue.

"I finally got it! Thanks to God," Mayol told philboxing.com by phone.

After the fight, Sosa asked for a rematch and Mayol, who failed four times in the past to win a world crown, agreed.

"Anytime," Mayol, now based in Los Angeles, told Sosa.

"He asked me for a rematch after the fight and I’ll give it to him," Mayol told philboxing.com. "But I’ll have to talk to Manny (Pacquiao) first."

Pacquiao is now managing the career of Mayol, having bought Mayol’s rights from his former Japanese manager, Yasuo Matsuoka.

Mayol said he felt Sosa was drained right in the first round and was feeling the punches coming his way.

A barrage of combinations dropped Sosa in the second round. Although the Mexican managed to beat the count, the referee stepped in after Mayol landed another barrage of shots.

Mayol improved his record to 26-2-1 with 20 KOs while Sosa, who won the WBC light flyweight belt on April 14, 2007 at the expense of Fil-Am Brian Viloria in San Antonio, Texas, absorbed his sixth loss against 37 wins.
