Gloria rejects cut in tariff on rice
50% reduction seen losing P5.7B for gov't

PRESIDENT Arroyo has rejected proposals to cut the tariff on imported rice, saying this is an impractical move that would only end up reducing national government revenue.

Arroyo, in a briefing with the Philippine media in Hong Kong Monday, said that according to her economic managers who discussed the tariff cuts on rice importation, "even if you cut tariff, the price is so high in the world market."

Figures from the finance department showed the Bureau of Customs could lose up to P5.7 billion in revenues if the rice import tariff were to be halved.

SC grants Joey's bid to
stop military harassment

THE Supreme Court yesterday granted the petition of ZTE whistleblower Jose "Joey" de Venecia III for a writ of habeas data to stop what he said was military and police harassment.

The high court directed the Court of Appeals to raffle the case for hearing on April 15.

The resolution stated by authority of Chief Justice Reynato Puno required the respondents to make a verified return of the writ of habeas data before the CA within five working days from service of the writ.

Blue Ribbon not
dropping NBN inquiry

SEN. Alan Peter Cayetano yesterday said the Senate will not allow itself to be castrated or tamed by a co-equal branch of government into abandoning the search for truth about the $329 million national broadband deal with China's ZTE Corp.

Cayetano, chair of the Blue Ribbon panel, said with the Supreme Court practically shielding Cabinet members, the joint Senate panel is working double time on getting new informants or witnesses from the private sector.

Cayetano said senators are pursuing their own leads or potential witness independently.
