Natalie
Portman tackles
Anne Boleyn role with pride
BASED on the bestselling novel by Philippine Gregory, comes
the most controversial film about the sex scandal that rocked
the royal world. Titled "The Other Boleyn Girl," it is the
intriguing story of the ill-fated romance between King Henry
VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, played by Oscar nominee
Natalie Portman. She confesses that she first approached the
extremely daring role with research and found out that Anne
was a woman of both of her time and ahead of it.
"Anne had a sense of self-respect that was uncommon for a
woman of her time," Portman says. "She thought she deserved a
status she was not born with, and this ultimately led to her
demise. Marriage then was not about love; it was about uniting
families to increase their power. Anne accepts this, but the
unexpected thing is that Henry is charming, handsome and
educated. She finds him an intellectual companion, and her way
of attracting his attention is to challenge him."
On the other hand, Academy Award-nominated scriptwriter
Peter Morgan ("The Queen") adds, "Anne is a proper 16
th
Century diva – strong minded, stubborn and manipulative – who
accomplishes one of the great historical seductions, and
manages to withhold her favors from the most powerful man in
her world till she gets what she wants. She is the family
favorite, in pole position, and needs the limelight. And to
me, Natalie’s perfect for this character."
Since her debut at age 11 in Luc Besson’s "The
Professional," Portman has appeared in films "Beautiful
Girls," "Everyone Says I Love You," "Mars Attacks!," "Anywhere
But Here," "Where the Heart Is," "Star Wars" prequels, "Cold
Mountain" and "Closer," for which she was nominated for an
Oscar and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress. With
a psychology degree from Harvard, she most recently starred in
"Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium," "Goya’s Ghosts," "My
Blueberry Nights" and "V for Vendetta."
Directed by Justin Chadwick, "The Other Boleyn Girl" also
stars Eric Bana ("Troy") and Scarlett Johansson ("Lost in
Translation"). Presented by Universal Pictures International
and Columbia Pictures, it is released in the Philippines by
Solar Entertainment Corporation. The original copies of the
novel are now available at all branches of National Bookstore
nationwide.
