THE Armed Forces is reportedly bringing back today to Camp
Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal the military officers who are currently being held at
the Intelligence Service of the AFP (Isafp) jail pending the outcome of their
court martial for their alleged attempt to overthrow the Arroyo government in
February 2006.
Maria Querubin, wife of one of the accused Marine Col. Ariel
Querubin, said Col. Arnulfo Marcos, chief of the AFP Custodial Center, told the
officers the news on Monday night. "(The) AFP plans to bring the Isafp detainees
back to Tanay by fours. (The) Tanay boys (are) ready to go back home," Mrs.
Querubin told reporters. Camp Capinpin is the home of the Army's 2nd Infantry
Division.
AFP public information office chief Lt. Col. Bartolome
Bacarro said he is not aware of any transfer order and he has not talked with
Col. Marcos. "As of now, I have yet to receive any information that they will be
transferred. However, we would like to stress that it is within the authority of
the custodians to transfer these detainees to any custodial facility of the AFP."
The officers were moved from Camp Capinpin to the Isafp jail
last February ostensibly to facilitate the conduct of the trial against the 28
officers who are charged with violations of the Articles of War, including
mutiny. Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon said the transfer was also to
make it easier to rush anyone who gets seriously sick to the AFP Medical Center
in Quezon City.
"Esperon's reason why they were brought down was medical. It
just a ploy so AFP can build individual cells (in Tanay)," Mrs. Querubin
claimed. "Now Tanay cells are worse than in Isafp. No windows Just a toilet, a
bed, then bars. No space for even a table."
The AFP has also been improving the Isafp jail while the
accused officers were there.
Mrs. Querubin said the renovations at Isafp are still ongoing
and the AFP is spending millions for fences, quarters for guards, and basketball
courts.
It was not immediately clear if former First Scout Ranger
chief Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim and Army Capt. Dante Langkit will also be
transferred to Tanay. Lim has been detained at Camp Crame since November 2007
for his involvement in the standoff at the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati City
last November. Langkit has been held at the Army headquarters in Fort Bonifacio
since the failed overthrow attempt.
Lim and Marine commandant Maj. Gen. Renato Miranda are accused leading their
men to a planned march to the Edsa Shrine where a large group of anti-government
protesters were gathered and where they were to publicly withdraw their support
for President Arroyo. - Victor Reyes
