Gloria eyes NFA pullout
from public markets

Cheap rice to be sold at churches, mosques

A DAY after the National Food Authority said it was eyeing an increase in the price of government-subsidized rice, President Arroyo yesterday announced she was considering pulling out the P18.25 NFA rice from public markets and selling this instead in non-traditional outlets like churches and mosques.

This will deter hoarding and diversion of NFA rice, she told the Local Peace and Security Assembly in Bangued in Abra.

She said NFA rice, because of its good quality, passes as commercial rice. Erring NFA officials in connivance with unscrupulous traders divert the NFA rice and sell it at a higher price as a commercial grade grain, she said, adding government has caught some of these NFA employees.

Esperon working out deal
with 'Tanay' junior officers?

A LAWYER of officers facing court martial for an alleged overthrow attempt in February 2006 yesterday said Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon has sent a member of his staff to make "overtures" to the accused.

Trixie Angeles said Maj. Cristobal "CJ" Perez has approached the officers twice since last week, asking them what he could do for their pending cases, particularly those of the junior officers.

But Esperon said the accused asked to see Perez. "I did not send him there... They (Perez and the accused) talked with each other but I have not authorized anything."

DOJ favors pardon for Oakwood 9

THE Department of Justice will welcome a presidential pardon for the nine junior military officers who were convicted of coup d'état last Tuesday by a Makati court for the 2003 Oakwood mutiny.

Assistant Chief State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon said: "They have already shown remorse and have apologized for their actions. They respect the rule of law when they let themselves go through the whole process and have accepted the guilty verdict."
