"Edd" Aragon, 59, Australia based Filipino artist and opinion
editorial cartoonist for The Sydney Morning Herald, is in town
for his Tres Kantos, a tripartite exhibit involving three genres
in three different venues.
Aragon started his career at the Daily
Express. He was a professional cartoonist in Manila in late
70’s, working at Nonoy Marcelo’s studios as artist and animator.
At that time, he was also a contributing strip and editorial
cartoonist at The Philippine Bulletin Today and Philippine Daily
Express.
He left for Australia with (late) wife
Virginia in 1979 and made a career as opinion-editorial page
cartoonist of the Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian, and the
Daily Telegraph. Aragon was awarded Artist of the Year in
Australia in four different illustrative genres.
The first of his exhibits, Digitalla Prima,
are digital prints consisting of 20 manipulated photographs and
scanned images using paint programs. The exhibit opened recently
at The Oarhouse on No. 1803 A. Mabini St., Malate, Manila, and
will run until the first week of next month.
The second exhibit, Mulat, is Aragon’s
"invisible" paintings on canvas of legendary musicians, nudes
and allegorical images. On display at the Banyuhay ni Heber Arts
& Music Center 170 on Banlat Road, Tandang Sora in QC are about
30 white canvases with images visible only under ultra-violet
light. Central to the exhibit is a life-size portrait of Tandang
Sora aka Melchora Aquino, Mother of Katipunan. She was born in
Banilad (Banlat).
Exhibit 3 is a collection of Aragon’s opinion
editorial cartoons and caricatures published in The Sydney
Morning Herald, The Australian and The Daily Telegraph,
including prints of his political cartoons currently on exhibit
at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra.
It will open at 6 p.m. this Saturday (by invitation) at the
Maestro, Masterpiece Art Depot, 2nd floor, Room 07, Seneca Bldg,
1152 E. Rodriguez Ave. in QC, and will run for a month.
