 Masters open Galerie Stephanie

With over 40 Filipino artists being included in various international auctions, 2008 appears to be the year when Filipino art is finally earning its place beside its Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese and Indonesian counterparts.

At present, five major auction houses namely Sotheby’s and Christie’s in Hong Kong as well as Borobudur, Masterpiece and Larasati in Singapore have very strong Filipino sections in their Southeast Asian Fine Art or in their Contemporary Art catalogs.

Galerie Stephanie will formally open at 7 p.m. tomorrow with 25 works from the masters.

Titled "Obras," included in the exhibit are the works of National Artists Fernando Amorsolo, Napoleon Abueva, Jose Joya, Abdul Mari Imao, Ang Kiukok and Bencab, Presidential Medal of Merit awardees Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Juvenal Sanso and Nena Saguil, and masters Mauro Malang Santos, Romulo Olazo and Ramon Orlina.

The work from Abueva is titled Six Seater Molave Chair. There are two rare Alcuaz watercolors from his Madrid series done while the artist still resided in Europe as well as a major work in oil from his Two Moon series.

The show will also feature a set of prints by Anita Magsaysay Ho, a Sarimanok sculpture in brass by Imao, and a sculpture in glass by Orlina. The exhibit will run until May 8.

Galerie Stephanie is located at Unit 1B, Parc Plaza Building, 183 E. Rodriguez Jr. Ave., Libis, Quezon City.
