Military ‘liberates’
5 more barangays
‘Lost Command’ withdrawing to Maguindanao

GOVERNMENT forces have "liberated" five more barangays in North Cotabato, which were forcibly taken over by Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels last month, the military said yesterday.

The MILF had occupied 15 barangays, and two of them were cleared Monday.

Officials said some 160,000 residents have been displaced by the occupation of the MILF’s 105th Command and the offensives launched by government troops starting Sunday.

Redeployment leaves security holes: Biazon

With the redeployment of military and police forces in North Cotabato, Sen. Rodolfo Biazon yesterday warned of holes in other parts of the country where national security must be addressed.

Biazon cited the more than 30 New People’s Army rebels who recently attacked Quezon province’s Panukulan town hall and took firearms and ammunition from the police office after the withdrawal of the AFP battalion for redeployment.

He said lessons must be learned from the all-out war mounted by former President Joseph Estrada in Central Mindanao, when battalions were withdrawn from Negros, Iloilo, Leyte, Samar and some areas in Luzon.

‘Gloria has blood on her hands’

THE United Opposition yesterday said President Arroyo’s "selfish agenda" of holding on to power beyond 2010 caused resumption of hostilities in Central Mindanao.

Arroyo has "blood on her hands," said Makati Mayor and UNO president Jejomar Binay.

"Christian and Muslim lives are being lost. Thousands of families are displaced. Soldiers are being killed and wounded. Is this the price that Mindanao has to pay just to advance Mrs. Arroyo’s selfish agenda?" he said.
