Palace: Specter of post-term
suits doesn’t faze Arroyo

BY JOCELYN MONTEMAYOR

MALACAÑANG officials yesterday said President Arroyo is not worried at all by the veiled warnings from former President Fidel Ramos of possible court suits against her after her term ends next year.

"President Arroyo has nothing to worry about because she did not use her position as president for personal benefit," said Press Secretary Cerge Remonde at a media briefing at the Isla Parilla Resort, in Sarangani.

"The President has said very recently, in fact in her state of the nation address, that she has not personally benefited from her administration and she has nothing to fear because her accomplishments, her achievements in infrastructure, in basic services, in human development, will speak for her," Remonde said.

Cabinet Secretary Silvestre Bello III sought to cool down Malacañang’s reaction to Ramos’ statements, saying they were "very valued advice coming from a very, very competent former president."

Last Monday, Ramos "counseled" Arroyo that it is in her interest to prepare for possible prosecution for the many scandals in her administration and that winning a Congress post in next year’s elections will not guarantee her any immunity from suit.

The Church-based group Solidarity Philippines said it will start filing cases against Arroyo even before she steps down.

"President Arroyo should get ready to go to jail right after her Malacañang stint," said Fr. Joe Dizon, convenor of the social justice group. – With Gerard Naval
