‘Wowowee’ game
scandal reaches Senate

After "Hello Garci" now comes "Hello Papi."

Senator Mar Roxas on Thursday said he will conduct an investigation to determine whether there was truth to the allegation of game show rigging in a TV noontime program that sparked the heated exchange of words between two popular TV hosts of the two leading networks.

"We will look into this by first asking the Department of Trade and Industry what are the complaints, who are the complainants and what it has done and intends to do about this matter," Roxas said.

Roxas, chairman of the Senate committee on Trade and Commerce, was prompted to look into the matter due to what happened in the "Wilyonaryo" portion last August 20 in the ABS-CBN noontime show "Wowowee."

The allegation is that the show’s host deliberately committed fraud to ensure that the P2-million jackpot will not be won by the contestant.

But Roxas said he wanted to gather facts first before his committee enters into the showbiz controversy.

"Based on this information, we shall file an appropriate resolution for a Senate inquiry with the end-goal of strengthening our consumer welfare code," said Roxas in a press statement.

Roxas said he will send summons to ABS-CBN’s "Wowowee" program TV host Willie Revillame to shed light on why there was such allegation of fraud in his show.

Joey de Leon, one of the hosts of rival TV program "Eat Bulaga," said during yesterday’s program that the Senate should investigate the fraud.

He also called on Revillame to explain to the public why there was rigging in his game show portion "Wilyonaryo."

Meanwhile, the office of Senator Lito Lapid, who is chairman of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, is waiting for the report of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) that will become the basis of his proposed Senate investigation.

The controversy deepened as Revillame and de Leon exchanged heated words in their respective programs the past two days.

In "Wowowee" last Wednesday, Revillame, in between sobs, denied the alleged cheating and appealed to de Leon to stop spreading such allegation.

In response, de Leon chided Revillame who he said owe the public an explanation about the game rigging allegation.

"Kaibigan, eto lang ang payo ko sa iyo. Dapat ay matuto ka munang magpaliwanag. Explain before you complain," De Leon repeatedly said, without naming Revillame.
