Sin statue unveiled today in Aklan

THE late Manila Archbishop Jaime L. Cardinal Sin will be honored today in simple but solemn rites in his hometown of New Washington, Aklan.

President Arroyo is expected to grace the unveiling of Sin’s gigantic brass statue, sculpted by the Castrillo brothers, at the New Washington park named after him.

"This statue is an affirmation of our deep love and gratitude for the leadership he gave us in times of tremendous challenges," said Ambassador Antonio L. Cabangon Chua, chairman of the Jaime L. Cardinal Sin Monument Project and donor of the statue.

Sin’s successor, Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales is the honorary chairman.

Antipolo Bishop Gabriel V. Reyes, who served as Sin’s auxiliary bishop in Manila, will preside over the statue’s blessing which will be preceded by a concelebrated mass led by Aklan Bishop Jose Romeo O. Lazo at the Diocesan Shrine of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary.

The installation rites will be capped by the unveiling of the historical marker for Cardinal Sin by National Historical Institute chairman Ambeth Ocampo.

New Washington Mayor Edgar R. Peralta, Vice Mayor Jean T. Velarde and Sangguniang Bayan members have spared no efforts in organizing the historic event which also commemorates Sin’s 79th birth anniversary.

Special guests from the legislature and local governments in Metro Manila, bishops and other prelates will be around for the ceremonies.
