PH conducive to women entrepreneurship

The Philippines landed in the top 10 countries in the world with the strongest supporting conditions and opportunities for women to thrive as entrepreneurs.

The Philippines scored 68 on the Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE)   landing 9th in this research covering 57 markets.

MIWE  tracks the progress and achievement of women entrepreneurs and business owners across Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, and North America.

Entrepreneurship is seen as a ticket to opportunity for women in the Philippines as well as in  other  markets like  Botswana (66.5, 14th), Thailand (65.8, 15th), Poland (65.4, 19th) and Costa Rica (65.0, 20th).

However, the research noted supporting conditions for entrepreneurs in these markets are not as conducive.

Yet it said, these countries have a strong representation of female business leaders, professionals and technical workers, a vibrant local entrepreneurship landscape, and high regard for the status of successful entrepreneurs.

The Philippines when compared with other countries with lower middle income economies in Asia Pacific scored high in a number of factors like women activity rate, women financial inclusion, women  tertiary education gross enrollment rate, cultural perception of women entrepreneurs  and women business leaders.

However, it scored an average rate of 23.9 for women business ownership.

Compared to their peers in emerging markets, women business owners in developed ones are able to draw from a greater pool of enabling resources and opportunities, including access to capital, financial services and academic programs.

Overall, the Index indicates that budding and established women entrepreneurs around the world continue to progress despite gender-related cultural biases that can create significant roadblocks hindering them from advancing their businesses.

“Women entrepreneurs have made remarkable strides as business owners around the world, even as they work to achieve their full potential. We believe that by drawing attention to their efforts, we can further support and empower women in their drive to run successful businesses and lead richer, more fulfilling lives,” said Martina Hund-Mejean, chief financial officer of Mastercard.

New Zealand topped the index with a score of 74.2. The only other Asean economy in the top 10 is Singapore at fifth with a score of 69.2.

MIWE tracks female entrepreneurs’ ability to capitalize on opportunities granted through various supporting conditions within their local environments and is the weighted sum of three components: Women’s Advancement Outcomes (degree of bias against women as workforce participants, political and business leaders, as well as the financial strength and entrepreneurial inclination of women),  Knowledge Assets and Financial Access (degree of access women have to basic financial services, advanced knowledge assets, and support for small and medium enterprises), and  Supporting Entrepreneurial Conditions (overall perceptions on the ease on conducting business locally, quality of local governance, women’s perception of safety levels and cultural perception of women’s household financial influence.
