The doctor is in

THERE is a physician among the 40 contestants of Binibining Pilipinas 2018 and her name is Ena Louis Lames Velasco, who represents Cebu City.

Born in Bacolod City on August 5, 1992, Ena is the eldest in the brood of three of Rogelio Velasco and the former Clea Lames, OFWs and businessmen both.

Ena studied at St. Scholastica’s Academy in Bacolod from prep to high school, then entered college at University of St. La Salle where she took up BS Biology. She finished medicine at Southwestern University’s Matias H. Aznar Memorial College of Medicine in Cebu.

She was on her year-long pre-board internship at Adventist Medical Center Manila (formerly Manila Sanitarium) when she decided to take a leave and pursue her life-long dream to join Binibining Pilipinas.

The 25-year-old doctor has won a string of beauty titles, including Masskara Queen 2012, Miss Southwestern University 2014 and Miss Mandaue 2015. She is aiming for the Miss Universe Philippines crown “because it fits me,” but, she said, she would be “happy to win any other title if that is my fate.”

Ena believes she is 85% ready for the pageant on March 18, 2018 when the new batch of queens will be chosen at the Big Dome. “There are things I still have to improve on and I am sure I will be 101 percent ready on coronation night!” she enthused.

After her Bb. Pilipinas stint, Ena will take up the board exams for physicians after completing her internship. Then she will decide which field she will specialize in. Right now, she is leaning on pediatrics, internal medicine or obstetrics-gynecology.  Of course, that will have to wait if Ena is crowned as Bb. Pilipinas.

Meanwhile, all 40 contestants have been busy doing the rounds of sponsor visits before making their first public appearance at the Talent Competition at the Farmers Plaza of Araneta Center tomorrow afternoon.

Column of the Day

Tearing down the house (Second of a series)

Jego Ragragio's picture
By Jego Ragragio | July 18,2018
‘The draft Federal Constitution is a clear example of tearing a house down in order to install a new door—where the new door goes into an existing door jamb. There’s barely anything new here, and the few things that are new, don’t actually need a constitutional amendment.’

Opinion of the Day

Heed this constitutional expert’s warning

Ellen Tordesillas's picture
By ELLEN TORDESILLAS | July 18, 2018
‘The critique of Gene Lacza Pilapil, assistant professor of Political Science at the University of the Philippines-Diliman, one of the resource persons, should warn us about the draft Federal Constitution produced by the Duterte-created Consultative Committee.’
