Janine shuttles between two roles

Actress Janine Gutierrez gets to show her acting range in her most challenging assignment to date. She plays Grace Evangelista, the lawyer who goes through an unspeakable crime that leaves her traumatized and blind, in GMA’s new afternoon soap, “Legally Blind,” which starts airing on Monday, February 20.

The 27-year-old gets to show another side of her as host of “Day Off,” where she gets to let her hair down.

She reveals that hosting “Day Off,” which airs every Saturday on GMA News TV, actually serves as respite, as it gives her the chance to travel and interact with people. She admits to enjoy going on adventures and trying new things, so hosting “Day Off” – a show that rewards hardworking Filipinos with an opportunity to enjoy a day with his loved ones away from work while one of the hosts take on his job – is a perfect opportunity for her to combine her two loves. Beginning February 18, she and actor Ken Chan will headline the show, and she could not be happier.

“I’m super happy to be one of the new hosts of ‘Day Off’! I’ve always been a fan of the show and I got excited every time they used to ask me to guest. Each episode is a new and exciting experience,” she says. “In the few episodes I’ve done, I’ve met so many amazing, hardworking Filipinos and I learned so much from them.”

Ken is as excited as Janine. “I’m so happy, not just me but my family is also happy for me. As a child I have always enjoyed talking, that is why ‘Day Off’ is a perfect outlet for my dream to be a host. It’s a
great feeling to be trusted with such a task. I’m so blessed and thankful that I’m part of ‘Day Off’ now.”

The two GMA Artists Center talents are no longer strangers to “Day Off” as they have been featured as guest hosts before. Janine did several appearances including the show’s 11th anniversary special shot in
Thailand last December while Ken was in the Chinese New Year episode this month.

This time around, viewers will be able to catch both of them every week as they take turns filling in for the lucky “Day Off” beneficiary at work.

“I’m excited to work with Ken. I’m really a fan of him because he is a good actor. I admire the way he does drama so let’s see if he could also pull off the challenges in ‘Day Off!’” Janine remarks.

“I was ecstatic when I found out that Janine will be my co-host. We’ve never worked in a teleserye or anything, although we already know each other. I’m very happy that I’ll be with a beautiful actress and host,” shares Ken.

Now on its 12th year, “Day Off” is the longest-running reality show of its kind on Philippine TV. Ken and Janine are not just looking forward to bringing new flavor to the show, they are also excited to meet hardworking Filipinos and trying out their jobs.

“I expect it to be challenging and fun. I know I’m in for different adventures and trials but I’m sure I will learn a lot together with the viewers of ‘Day Off.’ Together, we’ll laugh and be amazed at our fellow Filipinos’ dedication to work,” Janine says.

Ken reveals that aside from growing as a host, he wants to improve himself by learning how to conquer his fears. “Last time I asked ‘Day Off’ if they did anything special for Halloween. I am fond of scary stuff but I’m actually a little afraid. They told me they featured a gravedigger. I’d like to try that one,” he revealed.

Speaking of trials, Janine gets her biggest challenge playing a law student who is scarred after being violated by an unknown assailant in “Legally Blind.” In spite of everything, Janine’s character, Grace Evangelista, pursues her passion for law and eventually becomes a blind lawyer.

“Legally Blind’s” premise sheds light on relatable matters that are true to life, particularly women who are victims of rape, the effects drug abuse, pressures and rivalries within a household, but more importantly on unconditional love that binds families together and the indisputable resiliency of Filipinos amidst life’s challenges.

This drama showcases Janine’s depth as an actress, as she breathes life to the complex character. Joining her in the show are Mikael Daez as her friend, Edward Villareal, and Lauren Young as Charie Evangelista, her younger sister who is deeply envious of her. Also in the cast are Marc Abaya is William Villareal, the older brother of Edward, while Rodjun Cruz is Joel Apostol, Grace’s old love. Actresses
Chanda Romero plays Marissa Evangelista, the mother of Grace, and Therese Malvar is Nina Evangelista, the youngest sibling of Grace. Lucho Ayala plays John Castillo, the best friend and confidante of Edward who is also his partner in the law firm. Ashley Rivera is Diana Perez, the cheerful lawyer best friend of Grace and Camille Torres is Elizabeth Guevarra, the career-driven ex-girlfriend of Edward.

Janine’s uncle, actor Ricky Davao, directs “Legally Blind.” It premieres on February 20.
