Katarina Rodriguez off to Miss Intercontinental

BINIBINING Pilipinas-Intercontinental 2017 Katarina Sonja Artigas Rodriguez left for Cairo, Egypt last Wednesday to represent the Philippines at the 46th Miss Intercontinental Pageant set for January 24 at Sunrise Crystal Bay Resort in Hurghada, a tourist city on the Red Sea coast.

Katarina, 24, a professional model and long-distance runner from Davao City, will join more than 60 delegates worldwide who will be competing for the coveted title currently held by Heilymar Rosario of Puerto Rico.

She is the fourth Bb. Pilipinas titleholder to compete for the long-running Panama-based international pageant. Previous delegates were Kris Tiffany Hanson who placed second runner-up and won as Continental Queen for Asia & Oceania in 2014; Christi Lynn McGarry, who placed as first runner-up and won Continental Queen for Asia & Oceania in 2015; and Jennifer Hammond who made it as one of the 15 semi-finalists in 2016.

The 46th edition of the pageant was originally scheduled last December in Sri Lanka but was moved to Egypt this month.

The pageant is unique in that it selects the top contestant from each of the five continental groupings (Africa, Asia & Oceania, Europe, North America and South America) who will then battle it out for the honor to reign as Miss Intercontinental.

As we write, Katarina is on her way to make it to the top spot in the pageant’s online voting. She is at number two with 84,802 votes while on the top spot is Miss Paraguay Jessica Torres who has 85, 313 votes.

According to the Great Pageant Community, the winner of the online voting will automatically advance to the semifinals and will receive the title “TGPC People’s Choice”.

On Instagram, Katarina expressed her gratitude to her fans who voted for her: “Couldn’t be happier to know that I’m neck and neck for the top spot in the voting of @missintercontinentalorg ! Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat at mahal na mahal ko kayo!Keep on voting!”

Katarina is the last of the Bb. Pilipinas queens for 2017 to compete internationally.

Elizabeth Clenci placed second runner-up in Miss Grand International, Nelda Ibe was first runner-up in Miss Globe, Rachel Peters was a top 10 finalist in Miss Universe and Chanel Olive Thomas was a top 10 finalist for Miss Supranational.

Mariel de Leon bowed out early in the Miss International Pageant where our very own Kylie Verzosa passed on her crown to Kevin Liliana of Indonesia.

All the best, Katarina…bring home the country’s first Miss Intercontinental crown!
