‘Efflorescence’

By Ricky Francisco

MULTI-AWARDED young artist Herbert Pajarito celebrates his third solo exhibition, Efflorescence, at Galerie Francesca in Megamall.  The back-to-back grand prize winner of the 2013 Metrobank Art and Design Excellence (MADE) for painting, and the 66th Art Association of the Philippines Annual competition presents a series of fifteen works in his signature multi-layer single line paintings celebrating blossoming, in its many senses, and associations.

The abstract works, composed of up to sixteen layers of individual compositions using multi-colored lines and dots above a brilliant color field background, look like gardens of flowers, underwater coral gardens, or snapshots of distant universes, depending on each individual’s orientation or imagination.

They are like Rorschach tests to which free associations can be made, which is in keeping with the artist’s process.

“For me, painting is like a momentary escape from the pressures of daily life.  When I paint, my imagination soars freely.  I feel like I am actually in the gardens in my mind, when I paint them.

Maybe people who see my work can share in these temporary refuges and relax whenever they look at my paintings,” shares Pajarito.

“I painted these in retrospect of my own artistic career.  When plants flower, it is a sign that they are healthy, mature, and ready to bear fruit.  I feel the same way with my creativity.  I am nearing a threshold of exploring beauty through the use of line, color, and composition.

I feel confident about this after four years of exploring this style.”  Efflorescence, whether it is the act of blooming profusely, or the lesser known meaning, for crystals to form, imply both fruition, in its biological sense, and the establishment of order, as in the formation of the highly organized crystalline structures.

In either sense, there is the fulfillment of becoming, as evidenced in Pajarito’s latest body of works.

Efflorescence opens to the public at Galerie Francesca – Megamall, 4L Bldg. A SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City. Opening reception is on October 17, 2017, Tuesday 6.30 pm and runs until October 29, 2017.
