Duterte stands by Faeldon

PRESIDENT Duterte yesterday said Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon failed to stop the P6.4-billion shabu shipment from entering the country last May because he is surrounded by corrupt officials.

Duterte, during the celebration of the founding anniversary of the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption, said he stands by the beleaguered Customs chief, who is being asked to resign by critics.

“But Faeldon, I stand by him. He’s really honest. Kaya lang nalusutan siya because lahat diyan sa Customs, corrupt. (But the shipment slipped past him, because everyone at the Bureau of Customs is corrupt),” he said.

He said many government officials in the director level, some of them from the Bureau of Internal Revenue, have big beautiful houses and cars because of corruption.

Faeldon said he is not stepping down from his post because he is a soldier with a mission for Duterte, whose marching order is for him to stop corruption at the BOC.

But Sen. Panfilo Lacson has said he has a list which includes Faeldon among the Customs officials who received grease money from smugglers.

Lacson has yet to bare the names in the list because he was not given the chance on Tuesday’s hearing of the Senate blue ribbon committee. – Jocelyn Montemayor
