High priced sugar a blessing!

FROM ketchup to peanut butter to turon-saba to macaroni salad to ginataan meriendas to snacks and chippies – overly sweetened; much too much sugar (and salt too) destroying our bodies!  Science tells us that sugar and salt consumption is a major cause of many chronic diseases, such as diabetes.

Diabetes is a disease manifested through elevated blood sugar levels.  A person with diabetes does not have a normal production of insulin.   Insulin is a protein hormone that helps sugar leave the blood and enter the cells of the body.  Diabetes is a chronic disease manifested through elevated blood sugar levels because the pancreas got too tired of its endless production of insulin for all those sweetened foods.

Diabetes was the 9th leading cause of death from 1999 to 2002 in the Philippines.   At the start of this decade, diabetes affected one in every 25 Filipinos.

Jeffrey Valisno writes in his article that the doctor said the problem of diabetes could be attributed to the rising weight challenge of Filipinos.   Oh, Filipinos’ excessive intake of rice…a heaping plateful of kanin at every meal; while the Japanese satisfy himself with a tiny bowl of rice eaten with reverence.

Rice (carbs/complex sugar), table sugar, salt, and cooking oil are the top four unhealthy food items that Filipinos do not know how to use in moderation.

Obesity is one of the risk factors for diabetes.  Obesity has ballooned by 25% within a decade to 2008 from the 1987 statistics of only 13.5%.  Here are some disturbing facts about diabetes in the Philippines:

• Diabetes was the 9th leading cause of death from 1999 to 2002 in the Philippines. As of 2005, diabetes affected one in every 25 Filipinos.

• Of every 100 deaths, 5 died of diabetes in 2005; only 2 died in every 100 in 1999.” – National Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health (DoH).

• The number of deaths due to diabetes grew the fastest among all diseases between 1999 and 2005 said the report – from 9,749 reported diabetes cases in 1999, the number grew by 11.2% to 18,441 cases in 2005.

• As of 2012, diabetes affects the lives of 9.7% of the adult population in the Philippines, said Dr. Danilo F. Baldemor, diabetologist and immediate past president of the Philippine Association of Diabetes Educators (PADE), Inc., during a press conference last month.  “This number tends to double if we add the 12.5% of Filipinos who are at-risk of diabetes with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).  Combined, one out of every five Filipino adults or approximately 11 million has either prediabetes or diabetes.” 

Jillian Kubala, MS, RD tells us why adding sugar to everything to make it acceptably sweet to your tastebuds can cause you poor health:   Many people rely on quick, easy, convenient processed foods for meals and snacks. Since these products often contain added sugar, it makes up a large proportion of their daily calorie intake.  Rates of obesity are rising worldwide.  Addiction to sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened beverages, is thought to be one of the main culprits. 

Sugar-sweetened drinks like sodas, juices and sweet teas are loaded with fructose, a simple sugar, making one’s pancreas overwork to produce insulin to handle all that sweetness.  Consuming fructose increases your hunger and desire for food more than glucose, the main type of sugar found in starchy foods.  Excessive fructose (simple table sugar) consumption may cause resistance to leptin, an important hormone that regulates hunger and tells your body to stop eating.

Sugary beverages don’t curb your hunger, making it easy to quickly consume a high number of liquid calories. This can lead to weight gain.  Research has consistently shown that people who drink sugary beverages, such as soda and juice, weigh more than people who don’t.

Also, drinking a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages is linked to an increased amount of visceral fat, a kind of deep belly fat associated with conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Consuming too much added sugar, especially from sugary beverages, increases your risk of visceral fat accumulation leading to diabetes.

High-sugar diets have been associated with an increased risk of many diseases, including heart disease, the number one cause of death worldwide.  Evidence suggests that high-sugar diets can lead to obesity, inflammation and high triglyceride, blood sugar and blood pressure levels — all risk factors for heart disease.  Consuming too much sugar, especially from sugar-sweetened drinks, has been linked to atherosclerosis, a disease characterized by fatty, artery-clogging deposits.  A study in over 30,000 people found that those who consumed 17–21% of calories from added sugar had a 38% greater risk of dying from heart disease, compared to those consuming only 8% of calories from added sugar.
