The joys of aging

Columnist Leon Jaroff wrote about that business of aging in an issue of Time. “I suddenly swat at an intruder that has flown into my field of vision.” In fact, nothing was flying in front of his eyes. Just a ‘floater’ one of those lacey patterns that sometimes drift across the eyes of many seniors.

Then, there’s that low volume, high pitched hissing sound audible only to the afflicted, that most oldies eventually learn to ignore.

And advantages can occur in the advancing years…. There’s the mysterious reversal of the hair, new growths in the scalp, and reemerging in the nose and ears.

“All of a sudden, without glasses, I could read traffic signs and recognize pedestrians’ faces at a distance. At a certain age, molecular changes can occur in the eyes’ lenses that bring images back into focus. Miraculously, after decades of dependence on glasses, I now play tennis, drive, and watch movies without them.”

Other benefits mentioned: For many, losing weight without dieting; remarkable grand- and greatgrand apos; senior fares and prices; Medicare; no penalties for withdrawing money from Individual Retirement Accounts.

Independence–financial too. And as the most senior in the room, they let me say my piece without interruption, and I can wear my atrocious purple hat without snide remarks.

Which brings to mind George Carlin’s Views on Aging which is a favorite of all who’ve read it.

“Do you realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old is when we’re kids? If you’re less than 10 years old, you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. How old are you? I’m four and a half. You’re never thirty-six and a half. You’re four and a half going on five! That’s the key.

“You get into your teens, now they can’t hold you back. You jump into the next number… or even a few ahead. How old are you? I’m gonna be 16. You could be 13, but, hey, you’re gonna be 16!

“And then the greatest day of your life… you become 21. Even the words sound like A Ceremony. You become 21! YESSSSS !!

But, then, you TURN 30. Ooohhh… what happened there? Makes you sound like milk turned sour. She TURNED. We have to throw her out. There’s no fun now. What’s wrong?

“What’s changed? You BECOME 21, YOU TURN 30, then you’re PUSHING 40. Whoa! Put on the brakes… it’s all slipping away. Before you know it, you REACH 50 and your dreams are gone. But wait !!

“You MAKE IT to 60. You didn’t think you would! [“60 was soooo old !!”]

“So you BECOME 21. TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50, and MAKE IT to 60. You’ve built up so much speed that you HIT 70! After that, it’s a day-to-day thing: You HIT Wednesday!

“You get into your 80s and everyday is a complete cycle: you HIT lunch; you TURN 4:30; you REACH bedtime. And it doesn’t end there.

“Into the 90s, you start going backwards… I was JUST 92. Then, a strange thing happens.

“If you make it over 100, you become a little kid again. I’m 100 and a half.

May we’ll all make it to a healthy, happy 100-and-a-half.

I’m hopeful. My immigrant German grandmother died at 103. My genes are hardy. But we all still need to know how to stay young. Someone sent in the following:

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight, height, blood pressure, pulse rate, cholesterol, hyperventilation counts, heart beat, etc. Pay good doctors, leave him worry. My favorite mug says, “Age is a number, and mine is unlisted.”

2. Keep only cheerful people who like you. The unsympathetic critical grouches, especially relatives, pull you down. Stick with those who are life-fulfilling; eliminate the soul-draining.

3. Keep learning. Keep your conversations thoughtful, not just sounds.

Learn more about the computer, outer space, crafts, politics, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. An idle brain is the devil’s workshop. And the devil’s name is Alzheimer’s.

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Find people to laugh with. Laugh often… long and loud! Laugh until you gasp for breath.

6. The tears happen. Loved ones move on to eternity. Endure, grieve, and live on. The only person with us in our entire life is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are still alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love… whatever it is… books, friends, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, peace and solitude, whatever…your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health. If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, the next city, to a foreign country; but not to where the guilt, remorse, heartache are.

10. Hug the caring people around you; that you appreciate their love and show that you love them too. Avoid nasty people. Do not tangle with them… Ignore, Ingat, Ilag, Iwas.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take out breath away.”
