An oasis of calm in Boracay

THE island of Boracay has been a perennial favorite as a beach destination in the country by tourists, both local and international. At any given day, a stroll through the beachside will show the hustle and bustle of people, from tourists taking a dip in the sea, to hawkers vending their wares. Once the sun drops, the rhythmic pulsing of the music takes over as bars and clubs blast out tunes until the wee hours of the morning.

While most people enjoy the frenetic energy that Boracay has to offer, it can also be tiring for some. Most of the beachside hotels give guests easy access to the white sand beach, which also means the music from the bars can sometimes be heard even in the room. For those looking for some peace and quiet, they will opt to stay in hotels that are situated farther from the shore.

Best Western-managed Boracay Tropics is one of such resorts and while it might be smaller compared to the bigger-name resorts, it has made a reputation for itself as a place of peace and quiet amidst the hustle and bustle of Boracay.

The hotel is located in Station 2, the middle of Boracay’s famed White Beach. However, it is situated on the main road instead of the beach front. This means guests weary from their travel can easily enter the hotel.

Upon entering the hotel, guests are transported back to the days when Boracay was still an idyllic paradise. There are no modern architectural designs. Instead, Boracay Tropics features a mix of Mediterranean and Asian architecture surrounded by a lush tropical garden of towering palm trees. Right in the middle of this verdant property is the resort’s bean-shaped pool that offers guests a refreshing escape from the summer heat. The hotel buildings are unobtrusive, melding into the hotel’s perimeter, while free-standing cabanas surround the pool. The overall look is a tropical oasis, befitting the hotel’s name.

Upon check-in, guests are given a lei as well as a welcome drink called the Cucumber Slush – a mango and cucumber shake that refreshes and cools the body after a day’s travel. The rooms echo the tropical vibe of the resort, with its earth-tone colors and wooden furniture.

The pool is a welcome respite for those looking to get away from the glare of the beach when the sun is at its peak. Thanks to the numerous palm trees that surround the hotel, the glare of the sun is cut down significantly while the cool water is a treat from the blazing temperature.

For those who want to hit the beach, the famous white sands of Boracay is only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel proper.

Boracay Tropics has also recently renovated its restaurant TropiCafe. Here, guests can enjoy both Asian and Western dishes without breaking the bank. The restaurant’s bestseller is the Pata Tim. Here, whole pork hock is gently braised in a sweet-savory sauce for hours, resulting in fork-tender meat which is packed with flavor.

Another dish worth ordering is the shredded beef, which is marinated in a soy-based sauce and quickly stir-fried and topped with crunchy garlic slivers. The calamari is also a treat in itself. Here, the fresh squid’s flavor shines through the light batter.
