Austria keeps fingers crossed for Fajardo

SAN Miguel Beer is hoping June Mar Fajardo would be healthy enough to suit up in the Beermen’s next game in the PBA Governors Cup, but is also ready to play without the prized center.

According to SMB coach Leo Austria, Fajardo is still experiencing pain on his right calf, an injury he suffered in a game against TNT last Wednesday that forced him to miss the match against Star two days later.

The injury has reduced the 6-foot-10 slotman into a giant sideline cheerleader for Gilas in its FIBA Asia Cup stint in Beirut.

“Medyo may pain pa raw siyang nararamdaman,” related Austria, quoting the report of SMB’s physical therapist who is in constant communication with his Gilas counterpart.

“If his condition doesn’t improve, malamang ma-move back iyung kanyang pagbalik sa (SMB) team,” added Austria. “But once na bumalik siya, full assessment, para sure kami na fit talaga siya para maglaro.”

Before leaving with Gilas for Lebanon, Fajardo expressed the hope he could suit up with the Nationals should his condition improve.

Austria cautioned against such a hasty move, however, saying: “Baka ma-aggravate pa ang injury and that shouldn’t happen.

“June Mar is the future of Philippine basketball and, besides, mas importante iyung sa November,” added Austria, referring to the start of the home-and-away qualifiers for slots in the 2019 FIBA World Cup.

Austria said based on the initial diagnosis, Fajardo needs a one-week rest followed by another week of strengthening before he can return back to practice, but that time frame now seems too narrow.

Should Gilas go deep in the FIBA Asia tilt, a possibility that arose after it beat defending champion China in its opening assignment last Wednesday, the earliest Fajardo and the rest of the Nationals could return is on Aug. 21.

The Beermen’s next game is against GlobalPort on Aug. 25, which gives Austria enough time to solidify his strategy against the Batang Pier – with or without Fajardo.

“Kung healthy sana si June Mar, madaling mag-plano,” offered Austria. “Kasi, magkakaroon kami ng double threat sa low posts, siya at si (import Wendell) McKines. “If not, we can go with Yancy (de Ocampo) or JayR (Reyes) or go small ball.”

The latter ploy almost worked in the game against Star, but SMB came up short and dropped a 98-104 decision as the Beermen slid to 2-1 overall.

“Nabigla kasi kami noon,” Austria said. “Na-injure si June Mar ng Wednesday, kinabukasan hindi na nakapag-practice. There was little time for us to fully adjust.

“Besides, very low energy talaga kami noon, coming off a hard game against TNT and playing three games in one week.”
