Cignal HD racks up 4th straight

BUCKING a sluggish start, Cignal HD made mincemeat of hapless Blustar Detergent, scoring a runaway 109-79 victory yesterday for its fourth straight win and gained a share of second in the PBA D-League Aspirant’s Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

San Beda gunner Robert Bollick Jr. and former Jose Rizal U standout Byron Villarias fired 15 points apiece while Davon Potts chipped in 13 markers for the Hawkeyes who improved to 4-1 in a tie with CafeFrance.

Earlier, Victoria Sports banked on a decisive third quarter run and stunned Jose Rizal University 76-66 for its first win.

Fil-Am Robert Herndon led Victoria Sports with a game-high 22 points on 2-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc to go with four rebounds while energetic big man Aris Dionisio churned out a double-double performance of 20 markers and 13 caroms for Victoria Sports.

Chris Bitoon came off the bench and also added 12 points as Victoria Sports won for the first time after four defeats and made up for its 80-88 loss at the hands of AMA Online Education last Feb. 13 while handing the Heavy Bombers their third straight loss.

Despite losing four straight, Victoria Sports coach Jino Manansala did not lose heart and told his players to just continue improving and the win will soon follow.

“Every game we’re getting better and I just told my players na ‘yung talo, huwag nating pansinin ‘yan,” Manansala said. “Ang mahalaga ay ‘yung improvement natin.”

Ben Adamos also provided a huge lift, coming up with 10 points and six boards as Cignal HD scored a big follow-up to its cruising 95-68 win over Team Batangas last Feb. 13 while handing the winless Dragons their fourth straight loss.

Hawkeyes coach Boyet Fernandez pointed to his gamble of tinkering his starters and their inability to make shots as the culprits for their slow start.

“We really tried to give everybody a chance to start and I try to mix up my starters,” said Fernandez. “We even played really well in the first quarter. The problem is, we were not making our shots.”
