Pumaren parts ways with UE

UNIVERSITY of the East coach Derrick Pumaren yesterday confirmed that he has been released by the school, ending his four-year stint with the Red Warriors.

There was no immediate report, however, of who will replace him.

Pumaren’s best season with UE was in his first year in 2014 when the team, then led by now pro Roi Sumang finished with a 9-5 card after the eliminations and forged a knockout tiff with National University for the last Final Four slot but eventually lost.

Pumaren compiled a 21-35 record with the Warriors, including a 3-11 mark in the 80th UAAP basketball tournament.

Pumaren’s final season with the Recto-based dribblers saw the rise of burly forward Alvin Pasaol, who scored 49 points against defending champion La Salle last Oct. 4.

In his final post-game interview, Pumaren expressed the need for UE to recruit foreign players, saying this will enable the team to compete with the established squads like La Salle and Ateneo.

“I need horses, too,” he said, referring to their need for an import. – Michael Jugado
