German wind industry
in talks for state aid

FRANKFURT—The German wind energy federation BWE is in talks with the German environment ministry over state support for companies in the sector as the financial crisis bites, a German newspaper reported.

"The expansion of renewable energy and climate protection will stall unless the current situation improves," Hermann Albers, president of BWE, told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in an interview to be published on Wednesday.

The financial crisis was slowing growth in the sector, mainly because project financing was becoming increasingly difficult and more expensive, especially for off-shore wind parks, he said.

"Shortly after the crisis began we thought we would not be affected. Unfortunately, we have to correct this assumption now," Albers told the paper.
