THE rat is the first sign of the Chinese
zodiac. Legend has it that the Jade Emperor invited the
animals for a party. The first to arrive was the rat, who
though small in size used his wit to get ahead.
It is said that towards the end of the
journey, the animals had to cross a celestial river, and the
rat asked the ox to ferry him across. When they arrived on the
other side, the rat jumped down off the ox’s head, and that’s
how he came in first.
Just like the rat of the legend, those born
on the Year of the Rat are said to be clever and ambitious,
creative, hardworking, fastidious, and sociable. On the
downside, they can become a bit stingy when sharing their
wealth or possessions.
In the Year of the Rat, we can expect 12
months of plentiful opportunities and prospects, not to
mention being relatively free of turbulence. This is great to
know especially if you are planning to make some long-term
investments, starting new projects, or keeping the home fires
burning brightly.
Like all Chinese New Year celebrations,
it’s also great time to socialize and join gatherings of
family and friends over a sumptuous meal. And it is also a
great time to join in the fun and celebrations at the SM
Supermalls this month.
Not to be missed is the traditional Lion
and Dragon Dance around malls on February 7. There will also
be a lot of merriment to welcome the New Year – a "Drums
Exhibition" tomorrow, February 2, at the SM Malls in Fairview,
Valenzuela, and Manila; as well as on February 5 to 7 at SM
City North EDSA. The clash of cymbals will also welcome the
New Year with an exhibition today, February 1 at SM
Supercenter Valenzuela; tomorrow, February 2 at SM City Manila
and SM City San Lazaro; and on February 4 at SM City North-EDSA.
Mallgoers can also get a glimpse of Chinese
culture with the performance of Chinese Choir Ensemble on
February 3 at SM City San Lazaro, SM City Fairview and SM
Supercenter Valenzuela; on February 6 at The Block at SM City
North-EDSA and on February 8 at SM City Sta. Mesa. Likewise, a
cultural show featuring traditional Chinese folk dances will
be showcased on February 9 at 2 p.m. at SM City Sta. Mesa.
Those who want to get fit in time for the
New Year will enjoy the "Tai Chi Energize Your Life" event by
the Chevalier Monks of Christ Spring Harmony Internal Hearts
Club also tomorrow at 3 p.m. at SM City Sta. Mesa. They’ll
also be thrilled with the "Wushu Exbition" at SM City North
EDSA on February 6 and at SM City Manila on February 7.
