Economy grows 7.3%,
a 31-year record
 US recession is cloud in the horizon

THE economy grew by 7.3 percent last year, the highest in 31 years, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

Gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the fourth quarter was 7.4 percent, from 5.5 percent last year.

Growth was solid, coming from the services sector, officials said.

JDV urged to step
down to save face

STEP down. Save face.

This was the advice yesterday of Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte, president Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi), to Speaker Jose de Venecia to spare himself the humiliation of being ousted by a floor vote on Monday.

Villafuerte said members of the party, which was founded by President Arroyo, unanimously decided in a meeting Wednesday to withdraw support from De Venecia.

Kampi has at least 50 members at the House.

Mother Ignacia two steps
away from sainthood

POPE Benedict XVI has issued a decree bestowing Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo the title "venerable," two steps away from sainthood.

Mother Ignacia was baptized Ignacia Incua. Her parents were Jusepe Incua, a Chinese, and Maria Jeronima, a Filipina. She belonged to a rich Binondo family.

In a declaration to be promulgated today in a mass by Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales at the Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz, the Holy Father will acknowledge Mother Ignacia’s "heroic virtues."
