N. Mindanao on alert vs
female suicide bombers

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Ten female suicide bombers, all foreigners trained by the terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah, would hit key cities in Mindanao this week, both a city official and the spokesman of the Army’s 4th Infantry Division said.

The Army’s 4ID and the Police Regional Office 10 have been placed on full alert after the General Santos bombing and are now concentrating its internal security operations in Northern Mindanao.

Two days before the bombing, Cagayan de Oro Vice Mayor Vicente Emano confirmed over DxIF Bombo Radyo that he received an intelligence report that key cities in Mindanao would be hit by terrorists this week. He said at least 10 female suicide bombers have already been trained by Jemaah Islamiyah operatives to launch bomb attacks.

"The presence of these lady sexy bombers of the JI is purely to terrorize the key cities in Mindanao," said Emano.

Maj. Michele Anayron, 4ID spokesman, told Malaya that the AFP and the PNP have also received the same intelligence report and they have already taken precautions. "We are now taking this report seriously. These lady bombers are all foreigners and members of the JI," he said. He declined to release any more details so as not to compromise the government’s plans.

Anayron said the AFP, the PNP and City Mayor Constantino Jaraula met yesterday to discuss and coordinate preemptive measures against possible terrorist activities in the region. He said at least three K9 bomb-sniffing dogs, a bomb squad and armored vehicles would be deployed by the military anytime to augment the police forces in the region.

Senior Supt. Isagani Genabe, Cagayan de Oro police chief, said his men have already been deployed for continuous monitoring of the whole city and the entire region. He said policemen in target areas have been augmented. – Benjamin Balce
