Tokens of luck

Just as we deck our homes with trees and wreaths to spread Christmas cheer, those celebrating the Chinese New Year decorate their homes with symbols of good luck and prosperity.

SM Homeworld has a unique collection of ornaments to welcome the Chinese holiday. Some are traditional tokens of luck while others are modern expressions of the Chinese culture. Here are exciting ways to greet the Year of the Rat from SM:

•Lanterns and candles. Glowing red Chinese lanterns will light up your abode and your spirits. It has designs of children smiling as if wishing everyone good luck.

•Buddha images. Create a sense of balance and harmony with Buddha images. There is a Buddha with a big smile symbolizing a good life full of joy and happiness and a happy Buddha standing and holding an ingot wishing good fortune, happiness, and long life. A happy Buddha carrying a big sack collects your problems and unhappiness and exchanges it with remedies, cures, and blessings. With the coming year, it would be good to have a happy Buddha carrying a big bag to wish you a moneybag full of wealth and financial success.

•Symbols of luck. Develop a fruitful and progressive lifestyle with hanging carps and pineapples with traditional knots on the top and tassels at the bottom to invite good wealth and fortune.

•The rat pack. It’s the Year of the Rat and it will be good to give it a place in the home. Rats atop a golden ingot and Chinese coins suggest a year full of luck and fortune. Sporty rats holding money attribute physical and mental fitness and a very busy lifestyle ahead. Golden rat money banks show how to be practical and down to earth.

•Modern expressions. The traditional cheongsam has become an iconic modern décor. The Chinese dress is a featured design of table clocks, picture frames, and jewelry holders. Culture also meets function in cheongsams in bookend, magnet, and wine openers.

These décor items can also be used as accent pieces to create an eclectic mix of world styles. All are available at the Homeworld Department of all SM stores.
