DOLE program
to help minimum wage earners
IN a bid to provide minimum wage earners with additional
income, the Department of Labor and Employment is looking to tap labor unions
and workers’ groups to spearhead efforts to manage their independent business
undertakings under the Workers Income Augmentation Program.
Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said workers’ confederations
could play key roles in aiding the low-income workers in their endeavor to
establish livelihood activities aside from their regular jobs.
"Through the unions, beneficiaries would be assisted to form
a project management team which will direct and supervise the daily operation of
the business while they are in their respective jobs," Brion said in a
statement.
Brion said that aside from aiding the low income workers from
the formal sectors, the program would enable the workers to gain and apply
essential skills in managing livelihood and business undertakings.
He said unorganized labor groups may also avail themselves of the program
through partners already accredited by DOLE. – Gerard Naval
