GIUSEPPE Bede Sampedro, or GB as his friends
and showbiz colleagues call him, directs Toni Gonzaga’s very
first major concert titled "Catch Me... Toni Gonzaga" at the
Aliw Theater on February 9 (Saturday), 8 p.m. GB is also
director of the very popular lifestyle show, "Boy and Kris" on
ABS-CBN.
As the director of Toni Gonzaga’s upcoming
concert, GB discovered a lot of admirable traits from the young
singer. "Napapabilib niya ako kasi distinct ‘yong
boses niya," he says. "Para sa akin kasi dapat ang isang
singer hindi maging kaboses lang ng kahit sino kundi
magiging second best lang siya ng kinokopyahan niya."
According to this award-winning director, the
concert will reveal a different Toni. "In terms of look, you
will see a sexier (but not sleazy) and more mature performer,"
he adds. "It’s her time to shine. Most singers get the chance to
have an album, but not everyone can have an opportunity to have
a concert. In this concert, Toni Gonzaga will prove her worth as
a performer, singer, dancer, and host."
Much like Toni, GB slowly but surely built
his reputation in showbiz. Right now, they are proving that
talent is the real insurance for a lasting stint in this
topsy-turvy world.
GB who never had formal studies in directing,
had to learn the ropes of the trade from the best in the
industry. His passion in directing started when he became a
member of Villa Teatro, which gave him the opportunity to write
a script and direct a play. Doors of opportunity started opening
when GB met ace director Louie Ignacio, who saw a spark of
talent and creativity in this very young achiever.
"I consider Direk Louie as my mentor," GB
shares. "I learned almost 90% of what I know from him."
As an accountancy graduate from Colegio de
San Juan de Letran, GB does not mind not being able to fully
apply the things he learned in school to what he does now. "Sa
business side naman ng trabaho, nagagamit ko rin ‘yong
degree ko," he says. "Mas naha-handle ko ng maayos
iyong financial aspect kasi may background ako sa
accounting."
