UN team to probe killings Another militant
killed in Misamis
BY JOCELYN MONTEMAYOR
A FOUR-MAN team from the United Nations is
arriving Sunday or Monday to look into the surge of political
killings, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez said yesterday.
Gonzalez said the UN team, which includes
Philip Alston, UN special rapporteur on extra-judicial execution
and summary execution, will be in the country for three weeks.
Its activities include interviewing members
of civil society and government representatives.
SAN Juan Mayor Joseph Victor Ejercito
yesterday challenged President Arroyo and her allies in Congress
to follow his example by asking relatives not to run for public
office.
Ejercito, on the request of his father
detained President Joseph Estrada, the other day dropped plans
to run for the Senate and opted to seek re-election.
Estrada has also asked his wife, Sen. Loi
Estrada, not to seek re-election.
ARMED Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon
Jr. yesterday said reports about a plot of the New People’s Army
to liquidate President Joseph Estrada or members of his family
have yet to be validated.
Esperon said security forces, nonetheless,
have adopted measures to ensure Estrada’s safety. He did not
elaborate.
Estrada is on house arrest at his Tanay rest
house, which is across the street from Camp Capinpin, while
facing plunder charges before the Sandiganbayan.
