“[I]’m going to dedicate the episode I’m doing to my mom (none other than Sharon Cuneta), so I might as well give my best.”—KC Concepcion

KC tries heavy drama
in rich-to-poor girl role

WILL it be a loveless Valentine for KC Concepcion?

Reports have it, after all, reveal that she and her rumored boyfriend, Direk Lino Cayetano, have called it quits.

In any case, when KC, at the presscon of her first crack at acting in an episode in "Maalaala Mo Kaya"( MMK) was asked how she plans to celebrate Valentines’ Day, she quipped that she has not yet given it a thought. After all, things might yet change, KC added.

Her stint in the popular drama anthology excites her, KC confessed. She has been quite careful about her showbiz career plans. Thus, although acting is truly one of her passions, KC restricted herself to just appearing in commercials and doing guest roles in some TV talk programs.

The only full-length TV special, KC has appeared in, so far, was her special presentation on her four-year stay in Paris. "MMK" to be shown tomorrow, February 15 on ABS-CBN, is obviously quite different.

KC revealed that the "MMK" creative team, headed by Mel del Rosario, presented her with eight story lines. She chose to do the story which will be featured tomorrow in "MMK" because she said she is able to relate to it.

The story revolved around Darlene, who grew up in a luxurious life. "Just like me," she said. "And thanks to my parents."

But tragedy struck her family’s seemingly perfect life. Her parents met an accident which caused the life of her father, whom she did not just idolize but who have been pampering her all the while.

"When I read Darlene’s story," KC related. "I told myself this could happen to me and to others. Just as it happened to Darlene."

To get into her role as a well-sheltered and pampered party girl, who suddenly becomes her family’s breadwinner, KC had to submit to four days of acting workshop, under the supervision of Malou de Guzman.

"It wasn’t easy. There were times when I thought, I have had enough," she admitted. "Pero sabi ko, I’m going to dedicate the episode I’m doing to my mom (none other than Sharon Cuneta), so I might as well give my best."

Directed by Jerry Sineneng, who described KC’s performance in the episode as "intense and very professional," KC has a good line of actors supporting her: Derek Ramsey, who plays her leading man; Ricky Davao, her dad; and Agot Isidro. Also featured is Yayo Aguila.

"MMK" is hosted by actress and ABS-CBN exec Charo Santos-Concio.

"Endo," which means "end of the contract," is perhaps, the first indie movie to be graded with an A-rating by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB). The movie has also, so far, won three awards at the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. These are Best Actress for Ina Feleo; Best Editing, and Special Jury Award.

"Endo" has also competed in the revered "Festival des Continents" late November in Nantes, France.

"We had a standing ovation," said new actor Jason Abalos, who plays Ina’s leading man in "Endo." "I’m glad I was with the group who attended the filmfest. That was my first trip abroad."

Their role as young lovers in "Endo" is also their first biggest break, too.

The story of "Endo" centers on Leo (Jason), a temp (for temporary) employee in every job he gets himself into. He is like many young Filipinos who seem satisfied hoping from one contractual job to another, just to earn a living. No wonder that he takes to his relationships as similarly fleeting.

Tanya, on the other hand, is a dreamer. His encounter with her allowed him to dream and hope for a better future. However, he is not equipped to handle it.

Ina, who makes her acting debut in "Endo" is the second daughter of director Laurice Guillen and actor Johnny Delgado. Only 21 years old, she was a former ice skater who competed in ice skating competition abroad.

Jason, also 21, has appeared in a number of TV shows and movies. Two movie critics described his performance in "Endo" as poignant (by Manunuri Lito Zulueta) and deeply moving and heartfelt (co-columnist Mario Bautista).

"Endo" is produced by uFo Pictures, which also produced "Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros." It is written by Raymund Lee and Michiko Yamamoto.

The award-winning indie flick "Endo," is finally being screened in commercial theaters this week.
