Actor replaces Leyte
gov in Arroyo ticket

Cesar Montano edges out Goma

LEYTE Gov. Carlos Jericho Petilla has backed out as a senatorial candidate and actor Cesar Montano will replace him, Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, who is Team Unity spokesman, said yesterday.

Durano said Petilla will seek reelection after his mother Rep. Remedios Petilla (1st district) decided against running for governor due to health reasons.

Durano said Montano is from the Visayas and a credible replacement for Petilla. Montano, a member of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats, is from Bohol.

Villar bares attempt to block appearance at PMA homecoming

BAGUIO CITY — Senate President Manuel Villar on Friday said the Philippine Military Academy Alumni Association Inc. had cancelled his appearance as keynote speaker for Saturday’s PMA alumni homecoming here but withdrew the cancellation after "many" opposed the decision.

He said "higher authorities" were behind the move to block his speaking engagement.

The invitation was given to him last December. He was informed of the cancellation "informally."

Militant student leader shot dead

A MILITANT student leader was shot dead Thursday night in Camarines Norte, adding to the growing number of victims of political killings.

Farly Alcanta, 22, of the League of Filipino Students, was shot in front of the gate of Camarines Norte State College at 9:45 p.m., according to Ruth Cervantes, information officer of the human rights group Karapatan.

Alcanta, of Barangay 1, Mercedes, Camarines Norte, was a graduating Economics student.
