Flood toll: 14 dead,
2 hurt, 4 missing


FOURTEEN people have died, two were injured and four others were reported missing due to massive flooding in the provinces of Eastern Samar, Leyte, Albay, and Capiz since last week, the Office of the Civil Defense reported yesterday.

Ten of the fatalities were from worst-hit Eastern Samar which had 10 fatalities - all from drowning - two injured and three missing, said Anthony Golez, OCD officer-in-charge. The fatalities included two girls, aged 8 and 9.

Leyte logged two deaths due to drowning while Capiz and Albay had one fatality each to electrocution and landslide, respectively. Another was reported missing in Albay.

Golez said at least 69,176 families or 339,736 persons have been already affected by the floods. He said 59,338 of these families, or 288,782 persons, are housed in evacuation centers.

Golez also said that in Eastern Visayas alone, at least P551 million worth of property have been already destroyed.

In Villamor Air Base, Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog said C-130 aircrafts have been dispatched to airlift relief goods provided by various government and non-government agencies for the affected residents by the calamity. - Victor Reyes
