Treason in dirty Chinese loans?
Under Beijing gun, Gloria commits RP to Spratly deal

PRESIDENT Arroyo and former Speaker Jose V. de Venecia may have committed treason if the Philippine government signs a so-called "Spratly Deal" with Beijing in exchange for loans attended by bribery and corruption.

Malaya publisher Amado Macasaet said he was told by a source that under the "Spratly Deal," China would be allowed to explore territorial waters of the Philippines.

"This is treason because the pact has the effect of giving away Philippine sovereignty to a foreign country. In return, Chinese-owned firms provide the Philippines with overpriced loans for numerous projects," he said.

More soldiers from
countryside to capital

THE Armed Forces has deployed additional troops to Metro Manila to pre-empt possible attempts to grab power during protest rallies scheduled for Monday.

A composite battalion arrived at the headquarters of the AFP National Capital Region Command (NCRcom) in Camp Aguinaldo Wednesday from nearby provinces, Maj. Gen. Fernando Mesa, NCRcom chief, said yesterday.

The reinforcing battalion is composed of three companies from the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division based in Rizal, 5th Infantry Division in Isabela, and 7th Infantry Division in Nueva Ecija. A company is composed of at least 120 men.

Mike off to Hong Kong

FIFTEEN days after he arrived from Europe, Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo flew to Hong Kong yesterday. He was scheduled to appear Tuesday in the Ombudsman’s investigation on the ZTE broadband scandal.

Arroyo was escorted by Alfonso Cusi, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority; Brig. Gen. (ret.) Angel Atutubo, assistant manager for security and emergency services; and Octavio Lina, general manager of Terminal 1. His plane took off at 8:29 a.m.

Cusi said the First Gentleman told him he would be back either Sunday or Monday.
