Cangolf wins 3rd straight


BACOLOD City. — Tommy Manotoc scored 53 points while Bing Bunye and Lino Magpantay chipped in with 47 apiece as Canlubang came up with a closing 147 and eased to their third straight Seniors title in the Philippine Airlines Interclub yesterday at the Negros Golf and Country Club.

Manotoc fired a one-over-par 71 to lead the Sugar Barons’ charge for the day’s best score of 53 in the PAL scoring system that awards one point for a double bogey, two bogey, three par and so on.

The Sugar Barons had a 584 aggregate after their third round 144 and earlier scores of 145 and 148 at Bacolod Golf to win by 20 points over top rival Luisita in the event with Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, GE Aviation, MTV Philippines and Solar Sports as platinum sponsors.

"We all played consistently this week," said Cangolf skipper Tony Olives, whose 46 did not count in the four-to-play, three-to-count format.

"With a lead only of 11 points, we expected a close fight. But it did not turn out that way.

"It’s nice to win three in a row in our own division. But it would be nicer if we also make a three-peat in the regular men’s championship next week."

The Luisitans shot 138 to go with their earlier rounds of 137, 141 and 148 to settle for second place in the tournament with Action Asia, Business Mirror, Crossover, PACSPORTS and Royal Caribbean as major backers.

Richie Garcia came up with 50 points to pace Luisita, fellow Negrense Carlo Gamban chipped in with 45 while Iggy Clavecilla had a 43. Freddie Mendoza was the fourth man with 42.

Corporate sponsors of the tournament PAL launched in 1987 to provide its senior clientele another major golfest are Fortune Tobacco, GECAS, Mastercard, People Asia and Radio Mindanao Network.

Bombo Radyo, Callaway Golf, Century Park Hotel, Lufthansa Tecknik and Patio Pacific Boraday completed the sponsorship.

Manila Golf scored a final-round 128 to capture third place. Together with their previous rounds of 142, 131 and 125, the parbusters from Forbes Park wound up with 526.

Alabang placed fourth with 129-525 followed by Negros GCC with 131-524, Manila Southwoods with 118-496, Pueblo de Oro with 101-450, Shanghai Seniors with 123-418, Chamorro with 101-411 and South Cotabato with 103-394.

Orchard made 135 on the 49 of Ed Abesamis, the 47 of Kazuo Miyashita and Andy Vasquez’s 39 to capture the Founders division crown with 517.

Camp John Hay made 129 on the 44 of Fred Puckett, Alfonso Marcelo’s 43 and Nelson Eslao’s 42 to settle for second with 516.

Cebu Country Club carded 126 for 510 to finish third followed by Wack Wack with 136-506.

Eagle Ridge made 126 on Cesar Castro’s 45, the 42 of Si Kn Ryoo and the 39 of Efren Cruz to run away with the Sportswriters division crown with 493.

Philippine Navy shot 112 for 478 to settle for second place while Bacolod fired 123 to finish third at 475 followed by Veterans 125-473, Riviera 110-470, Camp Evangelista 106-462 and Palos Verdes 12-459.
