‘We felt sad for Kuya Germs’ friend who doesn’t seem to value his friendship.’
IT WAS Marian Rivera’s birthday last Sunday, August 12, and her birthday gift is a new TV series, an adaptation of the hit Koreanovela “Temptation of Wife.” The Korean version was shown in the afternoons. Marian’s version will be aired on primetime.
Marian will play the lead role of Angeline and her leading man as Marcel is Dennis Trillo. Playing the villain Heidi is Alessandra de Rossi, who was with Dennis in “Sinner or Saint.” For the other male character, Nigel, it’s said that a Kapamilya actor was tapped for the role, Rafael Rosell. Rafael is now managed by Popoy Caritativo, who’s also managing Marian and Dennis.

Gina Alajar is so busy these days. She’s in Regal’s horror flick, “Guni-Guni,” as the alcoholic neighbor of Lovi Poe, and also in “Luna Blanca” as the adoptive mom of Bea Binene. On top of that, she’s the mentor of the South Luzon candidates in “Protege: The Battle for the Big Artista Break.” Her wards are Jeric Gonzales and Thea Tolentino both from Calamba, Laguna, Mykel Ong (20) from Batangas, and Arny Ross from Dasmariñas, Cavite.
Thea was born on Aug. 13, 1996. She’s a high school senior but she stopped schooling to join “Protege.” Like most of the other female contenders, her idol is Marian Rivera “kasi versatile siya and can do both comedy and drama.”
Jeric turned 20 last Tuesday, August 7, when Manila was under water. The youngest of four kids, he auditioned online where he sang while accompanying himself on the guitar.
“Noon pa, gusto ko nang mag-artista but my parents told me to finish college first,” he says. “I’m now a nursing graduate sa Calamba Doctors College. Second runner-up po ako sa Ginoong Laguna 2012.”
Writer Jojo Gabinete asked him who his favorite actor is; he said Richard Gutierrez. “Mali,” Jojo said, “dapat sinabi mo, si Laguna Gov. ER Ejercito para suportahan ka niya.”
Jeric laughed. Folks say he looks like Coco Martin but we think he’s good looking in his own right. He also carries a suit well. The problem is he’s much better looking in person than on screen. Photos don’t do him justice.
Mykel was born on March 6, 1992 and is an aircraft maintenance technician. He’s glad to have Gina as his mentor. “Kasi parang nanay po siya talaga na strict but very approachable,” he says. “Favorite actress ko po siya.” Jojo tells him: “Dapat sinabi mo ring favorite actress mo si Gov. Vilma Santos dahil taga-Batangas ka, para suportahan ka niya.”
A former Miss Cavite Global, Bb. Dasmarinas and Circle of Ten winner, Arny Ross is the eldest in their batch at 21 years old. She has done ramp and commercial modeling. She says she excels in hosting and dancing, but with the help of Gina, she also hopes to be a good actress.
“Palaban ang personality ko kaya I’m willing to do anything to prove I’m deserving to be in ‘Protege,’” she says.

We got to talk to German Moreno at the presscon of “Guni-Guni” where he showed a video paying tribute to Mother Lily Monteverde and Regal’s 52nd anniversary in showbiz. The video is a collection of clippings showing stars of the ‘80s performing musical numbers in Kuya Germs’ “GMA Supershow,” definitely a collector’s item.
Kuya Germs told us a story about a big star who he has been helping all these years. It shows how good and loyal a friend he is and we felt sad for his friend who doesn’t seem to value his friendship. How we wish we could write about it here but Kuya Germs made us promise not to do so as his story would surely put his friend in a bad light. This friend even went abroad recently and Kuya Germs shouldered the plane fare for a business class ticket, including that of his friend’s longtime companion.
We asked Kuya Germs how his ward Jake Vargas is now that he has no show with GMA-7?
“He just finished an indie movie, ‘Delusyon,’ about drug addiction directed by Buboy Tan,” he says. “He’s with Ara Mina and Romano Vasquez. Very challenging ang role niya as a drug addict at talaga raw pinapalakpakan ng mga tao sa set ang husay niyang umarte sa bawat eksena. This is produced by Joe Angelo, dating taga-‘That’s Entertainment’ who now lives in Cabanatuan. Ipalalabas daw ito in schools to show young people the bad effects of drugs. Ako rin, I just finished an indie movie about horse racing, ‘Talo, Panalo, Patas.’ Trilogy ito, drama ‘yung sa’kin, ako ‘yung ‘Talo.’ Si Eddie Garcia ang nasa ‘Panalo,’ si Boots Anson Roa naman ang nasa ‘Patas.’”

She’s the the girl picked by most male candidates to be their ka-love team. When she was chosen as finalist of “Artista Academy,” she was using the name Bianca Reyes. But since there are so many Biancas in showbiz, she chose to use her real name: Sophie Albert.
She’s 21, stands 5’6” and lives in the Wack Wack Subdivision in Mandaluyong. “Pero bahay yun ng lolo ko, nakikitira lang kami,” she said.
Actress Tanya Garcia is her cousin. Her mom and Tanya’s dad are siblings, but most writers agree she looks more like Marian Rivera. Her dad had a stroke in 2000 and has since been comatose. Her mom runs their poultry business and if she’d win as best actress, she’d give her P10 million prize to her mom to start a new business.
“I really miss my dad because he spoiled and babied me when I was a child,” she says. “It pains me to see him sa bahay na nakahiga lang and we don’t even know if he hears us. But I still talk to him. I told him nakuha nga ako rito sa ‘Artista Academy’ and I saw there was a tear in his eye. Siguro happy siya na nakuha ako rito.”

We asked Ogie Alcasid if he’s comfortable playing dad to Sam Concepcion in “I Do Bidoo Bidoo.” “Okay lang kasi pareho naman kaming pogi and I’m 45 and he’s 19. Kaya lang, pag magkatabi kami, hindi kami mukhang mag-ama. Mas mukha kaming magkapatid. Sila ni Eugene Domingo, mukha talagang magnanay,” he laughs.
How’s it working with Uge as his wife?
“She’s one actress I’ve always admired kasi ‘di lang magaling sa comedy kundi pati sa drama. Maganda raw chemistry namin dito. Ayun ‘yung first trailer na may love scene kami, X rated. Sa eksena, nagkatampuhan kami, tapos inaamo ko siya’t habang kumakanta siya ng ‘Di Na Natuto,’ unti-unti siyang naghuhubad. Nahalayan yata sila. Kasi mga gumagawa noon, hunks. E, ako, ni hindi man lang ako nakapag-workout to prepare. Ngayon lang ako gumawa ng ganung eksena. Sabi nga ni Direk Chris Martinez, ‘pag napanood mo, mawawala ang juicio at peace of mind mo.
“First time ko rin makipag-fight scene, kay Gary Valenciano pa. And also with Jimmy Fabregas. Palaban ako rito. We’ve seen the film and I’m so proud to be part of it. Maganda talaga siya.”

After Lolit Solis revealed in “Startalk” that Ai Ai de las Alas has officially tied the knot with former cager Jed Alvin Salang, the groom got a lot of congratulatory greetings from relatives and friends. Ai Ai got curious as no one seems to be greeting her.
“Puro sa kanya lang may bumabati at nagko-congratulate,” she told a friend. “How come sa akin, wala?”
Ai Ai and Jed stayed in the U.S.A. for nearly month and it’s said it was in Las Vegas that they tied the knot. If it’s one of those quickie marriages so common there, then it would be easy later on to get a divorce if the marriage doesn’t work.
Earlier, Ai Ai said they would get married in December yet, but it seems they could not wait anymore. Well, for all we know, they might still proceed with that Christian wedding in December. Ai Ai is in her mid-40s and Jed is in his late 20s. Here’s hoping the relationship would truly work in spite of the odds and the disparities between them.

Among the eight male finalists in “Artista Academy,” only Brent Manzano cried after his name was called. Why?
“Nag-flashback kasi sa’kin lahat ng hirap na pinagdaanan ko sa buhay,” he says. “I joined PBB (‘Pinoy Big Brother’) and ‘Starstruck’ before, rejected ako. That night, ready na rin ako to be rejected again, kaya when I made it, napaiyak ako.”
An only child of a Pinay mom and an American dad, he was born on December 12, 1991. “My parents daw met in Boracay, tapos nabuo ako. I met my dad only once when I was 7, tapos never na uli. I was raised in Tibagin Island off Hagonoy, Bulacan. Hanggang 2nd year high school lang ang inabot ko kasi at 16, iniwan ako ng mom ko who went to Saudi. Natira akong mag-isa sa isang vacant lot and our neighbors just gave me food. Namulot ako ng basura. At 17, I went to Manila at sumali sa mga bikini contests to earn a living. Dun ko na-meet si Direk Manny Valera, who’s now managing me. Malaking ang utang na loob ko sa kanya.”
His real name is Bryan. “Yung Brent is my dad’s name. Full name niya is Brent Rule. Dream ko, hanapin siya sa America. Manzano is from my mom. Dream ko ring mapauwi ang mom ko rito para magkasama kami uli.”
Brent is just one of the many half-breeds in “Artista Academy.” The others are Jonathan Orlando and Alberto Bruno (both half Pinoy-half Italian), Mark Neumann (Pinoy-Croatian), Chris Leonardo (Pinoy-French), Akihiro Blanco (Pinoy-Japanese, a nephew of James Blanco), Stephanie Rowe (Pinay-English), and Malak Shdifat (Pinay-Palestinian).
