Bb. Pilipinas 2013 screening underway

THE screening of applicants for Bb. Pilipinas 2013 finally got underway last week at the Gateway Mall in Cubao, Quezon City with more than a hundred aspirants (so far) facing the screening committee who will select the batch of official candidates for the 50th edition of the country’s premiere pageant.
Pageant aficionados are agog at the turnout of applicants: a merry mix of home-grown and foreign-bred lasses, students and professionals, budding artists and models, mestizas and morenas, cosmopolites and country girls. Pageant fans can’t help but play guessing games and this early, many have already picked their favorites to contend for the three coveted crowns: Miss Universe Phililippines, Bb. Pilipinas-International and Bb. Pilipinas-Tourism.
A last callback for the applicants was scheduled yesterday and before the week is over, the “golden” batch of official candidates will have already been chosen to join the elite roster of Bb. Pilipinas beauties in the last 50 years.
Begun in 1964 to select the country’s official representative to the Miss Universe Pageant, Bb. Pilipinas has grown to eventually include other international pageant franchises like Miss International, Miss Tourism Queen International and Miss Supranational. To date, Bb. Pilipinas has produced a long line of world-class crownkeepers including two Misses Universe (Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973), three Misses International (Aurora Pijuan in 1970, Melanie Marquez in 1979 and Lara Quigaman in 2005) and dozens of finalists and special citations in various international tilts as well.
With three recent Miss Universe finalists in a row namely Venus Raj (4th runner-up 2010), Shamcey Supsup (3rd runner-up 2011) and Janine Tugonon (1st runner-up 2012) as well as successive semi-final finishes at the Miss International pageant in the last five years, the 50th coronation night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on April 14 will definitely be the most anticipated pageant of the year.
