When ABS-CBN Star Magic was conceived in 1992, its main objective was to supply talents for the network and its affiliate, Star Cinema. Over the years, it has discovered and managed artists not only for television and film, but for other fields such as recording, concerts and advertising. Today, the talents have become stars, and are some of the biggest names in the industry. They topbill TV shows and movies, are certified chart toppers and endorsers of high-profile brands. On its 20th anniversary, Star Magic widens its horizons some more as its talents conquer another stage: Theater.
Star Magic believes that theater is another venue where its artists can showcase their talents, apart from the usual TV, film and concerts. And so, in line with its tradition of providing the best and the brightest talents to the various avenues of the entertainment industry, Star Magic partners with Atlantis Productions for its latest and upcoming theatrical productions.
Atlantis Productions, established in 1999 and presently headed by Bobby Garcia, is well known for staging in Manila popular plays and musicals such as “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Proof,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Dreamgirls,” ‘Doubt,” “Avenue Q,” “Hairspray” and “Rent.” Other Atlantis projects which have featured Star Magic artists include “Legally Blonde” (Guji Lorenzana, Nyoy Volante), “Little Mermaid” (Erik Santos), “Next to Normal” (Markki Stroem), and most recently, “In the Heights” (K-la Rivera, Nyoy Volante).
Atlantis continues its 2012 season with the critically-acclaimed “Rock of Ages, “a hilarious, feel-good love story told thru such ‘80s hit anthems like “I Want To Know What Love Is,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “We Built This City,” “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “Every Rose Has Its Thorn.“
International rock sensation MiG Ayesa heads the cast as Stacee Jaxx, a role he also played in the Broadway version. Fil-Aussie MiG was one of the finalists of the reality show “Rockstar: INXS.”
Joining the cast are two of Star Magic’s very own. Nyoy was last seen playing Usnavi in “In the Heights,” where he earned critical acclaim and an Aliw Award nomination for his performance. In “Rock of Ages,” he plays Drew Boley, an aspiring rock star with big dreams. Originally a songwriter and acoustic balladeer, Nyoy has become quite a revelation on the theater stage, dishing out phenomenal, well-applauded performances. Vina Morales plays Sherrie, a small-town girl who goes to LA to pursue her dreams of being an actress. Known for her energetic song and dance numbers, Vina’s performance in “Rock” is highly-anticipated, this being her first theater project. In her many years in entertainment, Vina has done practically everything – teleseryes, movies, recording, concerts here and abroad. Doing theater is one of the few things left on her to-do list, and when the opportunity presented itself, she did not hesitate to grab it. Vina feels that she is ready and able, and was willing to give up another project with ABS-CBN, just to be able to do “Rock of Ages.”
“Rock of Ages” is directed by Chari Arespacochaga, and will run from June 15 to July 8 at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater at the RCBC Plaza in Makati. Call Atlantis Productions at 8927078 for more.
