 Xmas break ends; classes resume today

The Department of Education (DepEd) said yesterday that classes at the elementary and secondary level will resume today after two-week Christmas and New Year break.

But owners of private schools have the discretion to resume classes today or on Monday, January 7.

DepEd Undersecretary Ramon Bacani asked parents of schoolchil-dren in private schools to check with administrators to avoid confusion regarding class schedules.

Bacani said DepEd has been coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP) particularly in Metro Manila and local government units to ensure the safety of students.

Earlier, Metro Manila police chief, Chief Supt. Geary Barias assured the safety of students in the metropolis as he said he has already ordered the five district commanders under his jurisdiction to deploy additional uniformed and non-uniformed personnel especially near schools.

Blast damages Transco tower

Armed men bombed on Tuesday a tower owned by the National Transmission Corporation (Transco) in Lanao del Norte but failed to totally disrupt power supply.

Chief Supt. Teodorico B. Capuyan, Northern Mindanao police director, said the armed men planted an improvised explosive devices at tower 22 of Transco located at Barangay Tingin-tingin, Kausawagan, Lanao del Norte which exploded at around 2:30 a.m.

Capuyan said two of the four legs of the tower were damaged.

Two more unexploded IEDS fashioned from an 81mm mortar shell were found stuck at the base of the two other tower legs. Raymond Africa
