Arroyo will finish her term despite destab efforts: Razon

NATIONAL Police Director General Avelino I. Razon yesterday gave the assurance that President Arroyo will finish her term amid reports that some anti-government forces are out to grab power.

Razon said moves to topple the government will not succeed because these are not supported by the people. "I assure (the public that) there will be no change in government. This will only bring our country down. Any coup will hurt our country economically. Ayaw na ng tao ang ganyan. We will only suffer. Dapat ay magtulong-tulong tayo sa pagsulong ng bansa, to be stable," Razon said.

Razon ordered his men to check reports that identified anti-government forces have been hatching plots to destabilize the government to coincide with projected mass actions during significant dates.

"There is always a possibility that their plans to destabilize the government will jive with demonstrations," Razon said, citing the Manila Peninsula standoff that was to have been launched on Nov. 30, Bonifacio Day, except that the Magdalo soldiers moved a day early.

Razon reminded rally organizers to secure permits from the concerned local government unit and to observe rally zones. He said Task Force Manila Shield, a police counter-measure to thwart any attack on key installations, including Malacañang Palace, will be activated as the need arises.

"We are verifying all information. We have been exchanging notes with our counterparts in the Armed Forces. We are trying to correlate all information," he said.

Talks of fresh attempts of destabilization were aired by Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez last week.

Razon said the government is now disclosing alleged destabilization attempts to the public "so it can help prevent these moves."

He said checkpoints will be established in chosen areas but imposition of curfew is still under study. "Depende yan. Pero sa ngayon hindi pa kailangan."

He said the PNP remains on normal alert but all regional directors are on guard for any eventuality. – Raymond Africa
