On its fourth offering for its 32nd theater season, Dulaang
UP stages a Filipino classic about love, honor and war –
Francisco Baltazar’s "Orosman at Zafira."
Considered as one of the most well written literary pieces of
the Prince of Tagalog Poetry, Orosman at Zafira tells the story
of man’s lust for power while highlighting the women and how
they challenge the social norms in order to free themselves from
the bondage created by the society they live in. In the cast
are: Maita Ponce (Zafira), Arnold Reyes and Lex Marcos (Orosman/Abdalap),
JC Santos (Zelim), Ricky Ibe (Boulasem), Stella Canete and Jean
Judith Javier (Gulnara); Hazel Maranan, Tao Aves, and Natasha
Cabrera (Zelima).
The new production is infused with movement and choreography
by director Dexter Santos does. Adding color to the performance
is the original neo-ethnic music composed by Pinikpikan’s lead
vocalist Carol Bello. Joining the team is Anril Tiatco
(deviser), Tuxqs Rutaquio (production designer), and John Ilao
Batalla (lighting designer).
Orosman at Zafira will be part of the 1st International
Komedya Fiesta of the UP Centennial Celebration. It will be
staged at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor, Palma
Hall, UP Diliman Quezon City from February 13 to March 2.
