Strike 2: Sanchez wins
TRO on suspension
CA order beats DILG deadline to vacate
BY EVANGELINE DE VERA
BATANGAS Gov. Armando Sanchez yesterday
obtained a 60-day temporary restraining order from the Court of
Appeals against the suspension order issued against him by the
Ombudsman.
In a three-page resolution penned by
Associate Justice Regalado Maambong, the Court of Appeals’
Special Fourth Division said the enforcement of the Ombudsman’s
Sept. 26, 2006 order "would work injustice" to the petitioner,
considering that the Ombudsman imposed a six-month preventive
suspension without pay, which might be fully implemented even
before Sanchez’ petition is acted upon by the CA.
Concurring in the resolution were CA
Associate Justices Rosmari Carandang and Arturo Tayag.
THE Metro Manila Mayor’s League yesterday
condemned the police takeover of the Iloilo provincial capitol,
saying the incident stained the country’s image before the
world.
Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, league president,
said Wednesday’s takeover, which showed members of the PNP
Regional Mobile Group based in the Western Visayas manhandling
civilians, stole the gains from the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations and East Asian summits hosted by the Philippines
last week in Cebu.
"With the international press showing the
incident to the world the image of our country has been
stained," he said. "There was really an arrogant use of power
here and I can understand the feelings of my fellow mayors
because I myself feel the same way."
MALACAÑANG yesterday directed government
information officers to trumpet the achievements of the Arroyo
administration so its candidates could secure an 8-4 win in the
Senate race and a sweep of local positions.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita gave the
directive during a one-day communication planning workshop at
the Bahay Pangarap at the PSG compound, which was attended by
the public information officers (PIOs) of all government
agencies.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye and Cabinet
Secretary Ricardo Saludo joined Ermita in giving the PIOs their
marching orders.
