CIDG nabs fake dollar and peso bill makers in Davao

AGENTS of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group arrested three men responsible for the proliferation of fake peso and dollar bills during a raid in Davao and Tagum Cities last Wednesday.

Chief Supt. Raul Castañeda, CIDG chief, identified the arrested suspects as alleged ring leader Eduardo Bunani alias Wang Yu, and his two cohorts known as Crisanto Laolao, and Danilo Cortez.

Armed with a search warrant issued by Judge Danilo Belo of the Davao Regional Trial Court, CIDG agents raided a house in Palmera subdivision, Barangay Canotocan, Tagum City, arrested Bunani and confiscated a still undetermined amount of fake peso and dollar bills, a printing machine, an ultraviolet light detector and other gadgets used in the illegal activity.

A follow-up raid along Roxas street in Davao City led to the capture of Laolao and Cortez with several fake P1,000 bills and dollar bills in their possession. – Raymond Africa

Radio announcer shot dead in Cotabato

A PART-TIME radio announcer was shot dead by unidentified men in Cotabato City Wednesday night in what police said could be a case of mistaken identity.

Cotabato City police director Senior Supt. Willie Dangane identified the victim as Badrolin Abbas, a part-time broadcaster at dxCM Radyo Ukay based in Cotabato City.

Reports said Abbas was shot dead by unidentified men at the corner of Sinsuat and Quezon avenues at around 9 pm while moonlighting as a driver for the passenger multicab of his brother.

Police said a CCTV camera mounted in an establishment near the crime scene captured the incident and will be used by investigators to speed up their probe. Investigators theorized that Abbas’ brother was the real target of the assassins since he has been receiving death threats in the past days. – Raymond Africa

OMB intercepts pirated DVDs, VCDs

ELEMENTS of the Optical Media Board (OMB) intercepted 38 boxes of counterfeit optical media from a group of individuals at Cebu Pacific’s cargo area in Pasay City last Jan. 21. The boxes which contained various titles, were intended for delivery to Bacolod, Cebu, Tagbilaran, Davao and Gen. Santos City.

OMB Chairman Eduardo Manzano said that prior to the raid, the suspects had already been under surveillance by the OMB’s Enforcement and Investigation Division headed by Manuel Mangubat. Monitoring was conducted with the assistance of the Manila International Airport Authority led by Col. Rene M. Gonzalez.

During the operation, the suspicious behavior of a certain SPO4 Cesar Suarez attracted the attention of both agencies. It was later discovered that Suarez had allowed two of the suspects to escape by allowing them to use the washrooms. Authorities feel that Suarez may have played a larger role in the suspects’ operation, as he was in charge of the x-ray machine at the cargo hold where the contraband was seized.

A suspect named Animudin Imam is now under the custody of Airport Security. The OMB and the MIAA are now conducting further investigation and studying the possibility of possible filing administrative and criminal actions against Suarez.
